Where to drive from Nice

Nice is situated in southern France and is a great place to visit because there are so many places to visit within a fairly short driving distance.

Around Nice there are plenty of remote hilltop villages connected by hairpin mountain passes. The medieval village of Peillon is particularly worth visiting.

West, along the coast, is Antibes with its fantastic beaches and cluster of hotels and seaside apartments. Antibes has a large marina which is home to some of the world's most expensive pleasure yachts during the summer.

Cannes is also upmarket and famous for its annual film festival. Apart from posturing boutiques, hotels and restaurants, it boasts the world's greatest concentration of paparazzi.

Beyond here the little towns and villages become even more exclusive, such as Saint Tropez, a nice place to visit for a few hours but very expensive to stay in.

Monaco while technically not part of France, is one of the world's few remaining absolute monarchies and survives on a reputation for attracting the wealthy but bored. Its Casino Royale, Castle rock, Aquarium and super-yacht mariners are jaw droppers.

Avignon is an historic town, once the seat of the papacy during 15th century upheavals in Rome, and the main centre of the lovely, laid back Provence region. Arles, on the Grand Rhône river, has a fine Roman history and architecture to match.
